I know some folks who are legit scared by these films, but they’re also far more spiritually afflicted than I am. I’ll admit there are a few good jump scares here and there and changing locations and exploring a new avenue of haunted culture certainly helped keep things interesting and hold your attention.Īs I said at the outset, I do find these movies amusing, but hardly special or amazing. But at the same time, it wasn’t all that refreshing and really was just tapping into a well that had long ago dried to a mere trickle of its former self. While this movie is certainly an improvement over the past few sequels, that’s not exactly a heavy bat to swing. A few years rest and we picked up 2021’s straight-to-streaming sequel Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin. And then it kept going and going before hitting a wall with Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension. Much like The Conjuring, the aim seemed to be to punch out another entry in the franchise as fast as possible - or at least a semi-related side story - no matter how unnecessary. Unlike Blair Witch 2: Book of Shadows (still the best episode of Scooby-Doo ever made), Paranormal Activity 2 actually made a boatload of cash propelling what should have been a one-and-done horror feature into a sprawling and spiraling franchise. But then much like its found footage sibling The Blair Witch Project, the film was a massive hit at the box office and a sequel was fast-tracked. Made with next to no cash and an enormous amount of creativity, the film is a prime example of how a lot can be achieved with very little. If nothing else I admire the first film for its gumption. I don’t think they’re “scary” necessarily but there are some good jump frights and genuinely disturbing imagery for the casual horror fan to feast on. Some love this franchise, while others are indifferent or dismissive entirely. With seven films of varying quality, Paranormal Activity was the high-tech low-fi horror franchise of a generation bringing in mega-millions at the box office. Suddenly, the shoe-string “found footage” film became all the rage and launched Jason Blum as a horror producer heavy hitter all his own. But 2007’s low-budget sensation Paranormal Activity captured the attention of horror fans - and Hollywood. Halloween, Friday the 13th, A Nightmare on Elm Street, and Saw are just some of the heavy hitters to grace the big screen with numerous (and counting) entries. And feels different enough so that people are happy we did it.”īlum is seeking the same balance of respect and disruption that made his “Halloween” reboots a success, which is why Green was his “first choice” for the job. “Hopefully, we will do the same thing with ‘The Exorcist’ that we did with ‘Halloween’–make it in a way that’s fresh and worth revisiting. “We are getting ready to make it,” he said. While the door is not completely closed for future “Paranormal Activity” movies, Blum has moved on to other priorities, including a reboot of “The Exorcist” from director David Gordon Green. It would come back if some director I love, like Scott Derrickson, said: ‘I have a great idea for a ‘Paranormal Activity’ movie. “With other things, you just have this feeling it’s time to put them to bed. “With ‘Halloween,’ we only had the rights to three movies, so we said: ‘Halloween Ends’! It ends for Blumhouse, at least,” he said. Though the production company that bears his name has become synonymous with inexpensive horror movies that often spawn multiple sequels, Blum made it clear that he doesn’t feel the need to extend his franchises forever.

The different possible packings and scatterings within the void make up the shifting outlines and bulk of the objects that we feel, see, eat, hear, smell, and taste. The void is infinite and provides the space in which the atoms can pack or scatter differently. Both atoms and the void were never created, and they will be never ending. Aristotle explicitly credited Leucippus with the invention of Atomism, although no fragments of his writings survive, and we have only a few fragments of the writing of Democritus (and most of that second-hand).ĭemocritus and Leucippus taught that the hidden substance in all physical objects consists of different arrangements of atoms and void. In Western Philosophy, Atomism is usually associated with the Greek Pre-Socratic philosopher Democritus, although in reality Democritus's teacher Leucippus (5th Century B.C.) was certainly co-founder of the doctrine, and quite possibly fully responsible for it. Atoms can combine based on their eternal properties to produce any of six “aggregates” (earth, water, shadow, sense objects, karmic matter and unfit matter), similar to the Greek concept of elements. Each atom, according to Jaina philosophy, has one kind of taste, one smell, one color, and two kinds of touch, and can exist in one of two states, "subtle" (in which case they can fit in infinitesimally small spaces) and "gross" (in which case they have extension and occupy a finite space). The Jains envisioned the world as consisting wholly of atoms, except for souls. Then Jain religion in India had also developed an atomic theory by the 1st Century B.C. The movement had a second phase during the 7th Century A.D., led by Dharmakirti, which considered atoms to be point-sized, durationless and made of energy. Each of these elements has a specific property, such as solidity or motion, and performs a specific function in mixtures, such as providing support or causing growth. There was a doctrine of Buddhist Atomism, which began developing in India before the 4th Century B.C., in which there was also four kinds of atoms, corresponding to the standard elements. These atoms were considered to have general (intensive and extensive) properties and specific (intensive) properties, and to combine in pairs ( dyads), and then group into trios of pairs ( triads), which are the smallest visible units of matter. and 1st Century B.C., with elaborate theories of how the four elemental atom types (with 24 different possible qualities), combine. The Hindu Nyaya- Vaisesika school developed one of the earliest forms of Atomism in India between the 6th century B.C. There is no room in this theory for the concept of a God, and essentially it is a type of Materialism or Physicalism. Traditional Atomism asserts that all physical objects consist of different arrangements of eternal atoms and the infinite void in which they form different combinations and shapes. This leads logically to the position that only atoms exist, and there are no composite objects (objects with parts), which would mean that human bodies, clouds, planets, etc, all do not exist. Introduction | Ancient Indian Atomism | History of Western Atomism | Types of AtomismĪtomism is the theory that all of reality and all the objects in the universe are composed of very small, indivisible and indestructible building blocks known as atoms (from the Greek "atomos", meaning "uncuttable"). The most powerful time tracking apps offer dashboards and reports that let you break out daily, weekly, or monthly time spent per project, per person, or per client. For example, if your phone rings and you jump into a 20-minute consulting call, you might not start a timer, but you do want to log and bill for those hours worked. You also want an app that lets you enter a block of time post hoc in case you forget to launch a timer at all. You should be able to edit the time log to subtract however many minutes you weren't working. What do you do with this information? We took a trip there to see her old family home in Villa del Parque, a quiet, almost suburban, neighborhood in Buenos Aires. She responded instantly with an address, one apparently embedded in her permanent memory. When we visited Buenos Aires, I emailed Oma to ask about where she grew up. My grandma, the youngest of five, was born there. Years later, the family moved to Buenos Aires so as to provide more educational opportunities for the children. He worked for years as a landscaper and gardener and built a family home only a few blocks away from the hotel. My great-grandmother came over from Switzerland to get married and start a life together in Argentina. With that conversation, he secured himself a position. It was the sort of place where royalty vacationed for months on end and guests were allotted their own horse and stable. Why Argentina? Family lore says that he couldn’t afford a visa to the United States Argentina was the next best alternative within reach.Īboard the ship, he happened to meet the owner of the Eden Hotel, a luxury retreat for the European elite tucked into the hills outside Cordoba, Argentina in a small town called La Falda. In search of economic opportunity (Switzerland wasn’t always the land of abundance that it is today) for him and his fiancée, he boarded a boat from Europe to Argentina in the early 1900s. My great-grandfather was a gardener born and raised in Switzerland. Like many good stories of family history, this one begins with a man on a boat. Only when he was no longer able to edit did I begin to notice some grammar mistakes creeping into her letters.Īll of this is a long way of saying: Oma grew up in a different culture, somewhere far from the United States. I later found out this was thanks to my grandfather, a journalist and editor. But her letters to me – written in English – were always flawless. After all, this was just how my Oma spoke. I didn’t pay much attention to it when I was growing up. More than that, she actually knew something about the game. During my soccer games as a kid, she was usually the only grandma in attendance, cheering away on the sidelines. She was also an avid soccer (football) fan, seeking it out on television whenever she had the chance. This was mate: an Argentine beverage, an Argentine social institution. Whenever I tasted it, I’d wince, and she’d laugh, “ It’s just something you have to grow up with to like.” She really was a little different, in a good way.ĭuring my visits with her in the suburbs of Philadelphia, she would drink this bitter herbal tea out of a hollow gourd using a funny sieve-like metal straw. She wasn’t just the cutest grandma in the world, one that I called Oma. When I was growing up, there were a few things that made my grandma different from other grandmas. Isn't she cute (Oma, that is)?Īuthor’s note: Our visit to Argentina was months ago, so why am I writing about this now? With the holidays coming, I began to reflect on tradition, family and what it means to be “far away.” My Soccer-Loving, Mate-Drinking Grandma This may not sound noteworthy, but the fact that she wrote it in her mother tongue transformed it for me from a simple letter into a welcome to a part of my family I hadn’t known before: the Argentine side.Īudrey and Oma. Q: What’s the proper way to greet family you’ve never met before?Ī: In Argentina: with kisses, warmth - and a heck of a lot of steak.Įarlier this year, with a visit to relatives in Argentina only days away, I received my first email in Spanish from my grandmother. As an adult, you may crave closeness and intimacy but then push it away to protect yourself. When you haven’t experienced the love, affection, and protection of a loving man, you are more likely to develop defenses or protective mechanisms that keep you separated from them in some way. Trust is a major component of positive emotional attachment. She Fears Getting CloseĬhildren who grew up with a father who had poor emotional and physical boundaries or who were emotionally or physically abusive or intrusive are at risk to develop into adults who struggle to emotionally attach to others and receive/demonstrate love. Eventually the neediness pushes your guy away, which will confirm your greatest fear-that you are unlovable and unwanted. In an adult relationship, this can get exhausting. They may be accused of being self-centered, attract untrustworthy partners, or be taken advantage of, all the while experiencing a deep neediness that goes unmet. Unfortunately, women with a high need for validation often pay a social price. If a child doesn’t get enough attention or doesn’t feel valued, especially in her relationship with her dad, she will grow up and seek that attention from other men as an adult. In childhood, validation helps us feel and express our emotions, develop a secure sense of self, gain confidence, feel connected to our parents, and have better relationships in adulthood. We all have a need for validation, a need to know that a job was well done, that we are attractive, valued, and wanted. It’s common for these women to end up in abusive relationships and accept unacceptable behavior. Women who struggle with abandonment fear are at a higher risk of relationship dissatisfaction because they would rather be in a dysfunctional relationship than be alone. Abandonment fears often stem from childhood loss, such as the loss of a parent through death or divorce, but they can also result from inadequate physical and emotional care. It is now, in most cases, used to point to a girl with attachment issues. Over time, however, this term somehow got a gender label. You feel the constant need for assurance in your relationships as to if things are going alright. It’s true that some degree of abandonment fear is a normal part of being human, but when the fear of abandonment is severe, it can cause significant impairment in the ability to form healthy relationships. Daddy issues arise from the fact that you might not have got enough attention and love from your parents or caregivers. She Sticks with Him Even Though He Is All Wrong for Her They desperately want to feel loved, safe, and secure, but due to their attachment wounds (aka “father issues”), they unintentionally suffocate the life force out of their relationship. Women who behave this way are subconsciously living in a state of fear and distrust. Women who grew up with an emotionally unavailable father often develop an anxious attachment style, causing them to feel preoccupied about their romantic relationships. If you are constantly worried that your partner might leave you, check his phone regularly, or feel easily jealous, then this signifies that there is something deeper at play. But for some women, this is a chronic issue. We’re all human-we have all felt jealous, clingy, or insecure at some point in our lives. 5.3 Resolution and partially filled scanned volume.5.1 Anomalous propagation (non-standard atmosphere).4.10.1 Radar Integrated Display with Geospatial Elements.4.2 Constant-altitude plan position indicator.3.1.1 How to read reflectivity on a radar display.Radar output is even incorporated into numerical weather prediction models to improve analyses and forecasts. Raw images are routinely used and specialized software can take radar data to make short term forecasts of future positions and intensities of rain, snow, hail, and other weather phenomena. Since then, weather radar has evolved on its own and is now used by national weather services, research departments in universities, and in television stations' weather departments. Soon after the war, surplus radars were used to detect precipitation. Techniques were developed to filter them, but scientists began to study the phenomenon. Both types of data can be analyzed to determine the structure of storms and their potential to cause severe weather.ĭuring World War II, radar operators discovered that weather was causing echoes on their screen, masking potential enemy targets. Modern weather radars are mostly pulse-Doppler radars, capable of detecting the motion of rain droplets in addition to the intensity of the precipitation. Weather radar, also called weather surveillance radar ( WSR) and Doppler weather radar, is a type of radar used to locate precipitation, calculate its motion, and estimate its type (rain, snow, hail etc.).
